$5 Outfit, head to toe, refashion skirt from man's shirt

Okay, believe it or not, this entire outfit was $5.  Total.  For everything.  $1 top.  $1 shoes.  $1 necklace.  $1 skirt.  $1 belt.  The catch is, the skirt was originally a shirt.  A man's shirt.
That's right, a man's shirt.  Here is how it became a skirt:
First I cut off the bottom, right under the sleeves.  Just a
straight line all the way across.

Then rolled down the top a quarter inch and sewed, just
to finish the edge.

Then I rolled that down about an inch and a quarter, and sewed ALMOST
all the way around to make a casing for elastic.  Stop about an inch
before you get to where you started.

Then thread the elastic through, securing it so the end doesn't
go in.  Once you get it all the way through:

Sew the ends together, making sure it's not twisted, then sew the hole closed.
And this is what you end up with!

$1 shoes from Goodwill

$1 necklace and belt from Goodwill

This entire outfit cost $5.  The skirt took about 30 minutes to make.  Tell me what you think!  Would love your feedback.

  1. Way cute Carolyn and what a steal. Great tutorial as well. I'm new to sewing so seeing any kind of tutorial I can learn from gives me encouragement. :)

    1. Thank you Jess! Yes, I'm totally into thrifting for my clothes. A cut here, a stitch there, and they're like brand new again!
